Job Title: Senior Accountant Department: Financial Services
Reports To: Director of Accounting FLSA Status: Non-exempt Safety
Sensitive: No Summary The Senior Accountant supports the
Cooperative’s financial operations by maintaining accurate
accounting records, preparing financial reports, and ensuring
compliance with regulatory and accounting standards. This position
plays a key role in financial reporting, month-end close processes,
budgeting support, and internal financial controls for the
Cooperative and its subsidiaries. The Senior Accountant also
provides guidance to accounting staff and assists leadership with
financial analysis and reporting to support sound business

at all times. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Maintain the
Cooperative’s chart of accounts and ensure proper classification of
financial transactions. Prepare and review monthly financial
statements and supporting documentation to ensure accuracy and
completeness. Coordinate month-end and year-end closing processes,
including preparation and review of journal entries and account
reconciliations. Ensure accounting activities comply with GAAP, RUS
Uniform System of Accounts, FCC Uniform System of Accounts, and
Cooperative financial policies. Maintain and monitor internal
accounting controls to protect Cooperative assets and ensure
financial accuracy. Assist with the development and monitoring of
annual budgets and financial forecasts. Prepare financial and
statistical reports to support management decision-making. Assist
with preparation of audits, tax filings, and rate studies by
gathering and organizing financial information. Monitor financial
data and identify trends, discrepancies, or opportunities for
improved financial controls and reporting. Mentor and support
accounting staff by providing guidance on procedures, reporting,
and accounting practices. Prepare, review, and reconcile
intercompany transactions between the Cooperative and its
subsidiaries, including consolidation adjustments and eliminations
to ensure accurate consolidated financial reporting. Maintain
organized financial documentation, records, and supporting files in
accordance with record retention requirements. Perform additional
duties and special projects as assigned. Competencies Advanced
Financial Analysis – Analyzes financial data, reconciliations, and
reports to identify trends, discrepancies, and opportunities for
improved financial accuracy and reporting. Accounting Expertise –
Demonstrates strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial
reporting standards, and regulatory requirements while ensuring
compliance with Cooperative policies and applicable accounting
standards. Financial Accuracy & Data Integrity – Maintains a high
level of accuracy in financial records and ensures transactions,
journal entries, and reconciliations are completed correctly and in
a timely manner. Problem Solving – Investigates complex accounting
issues, identifies root causes, and develops practical solutions
that maintain accurate financial reporting. Attention to Detail –
Carefully reviews financial reports, reconciliations, and
supporting documentation to ensure completeness and accuracy.
Organization & Time Management – Manages multiple accounting
responsibilities, deadlines, and reporting cycles while maintaining
organized financial records. Cross-Department Collaboration – Works
closely with accounting staff and other departments to gather
financial information, resolve discrepancies, and support
operational decision-making. Technical & Systems Proficiency –
Utilizes accounting systems, financial reporting tools, and data
analysis software to support financial reporting and operational
efficiency. Process Improvement – Identifies opportunities to
strengthen accounting processes, internal controls, and reporting
efficiency. Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing – Provides guidance and
technical support to accounting staff and assists with training
related to accounting procedures and financial reporting.
Qualifications/Certification Education and Experience Bachelor’s
degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required;
Master’s degree preferred. 8 years of progressively responsible
accounting experience Experience in electric cooperative, utility,
or telecommunications accounting is preferred Knowledge and Skills
Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting practices
Familiarity with RUS and FCC Uniform System of Accounts is
preferred Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office
applications Ability to analyze financial data and prepare accurate
financial reports
