The Director of Athletics (AD) is ultimately responsible to the President of the University for coordinating and managing all intercollegiate athletic functions. The AD leads, plans strategically, administers, develops policy, and directs the NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletic program. The AD creates and maintains a competitive intercollegiate athletic program within an academic environment that emphasizes academic success, retention, and graduation. The AD ensures that the athletic program remains committed to the university's mission and strategic priorities and creates a positive culture that promotes sportsmanship, ethical conduct, equity and inclusion, and a culture of compliance. The AD represents Missouri Southern State University and the Department in a positive manner with a high degree of integrity and quality while ensuring compliance with all NCAA, MIAA, and Title IX rules and regulations. Specific Duties and Responsibilities Provides visionary leadership, strategic planning, and policy development for the athletics program; maintains a program that is committed to the university's mission and strategic priorities; administers the overall athletic budget; recruits and manages the coaching staff; and ensures compliance with all university, MIAA and NCAA policies, rules, and regulations. Assists in formulating policies and procedures governing athletic programs. Provides leadership with sound decision-making with regard to all departmental matters; ensures that the Athletics Department has a highly competent and diverse coaching, administrative, and support staff consistent with the University's mission. Evaluates annually all athletic team programs, coaches, and staff to effectively plan short- and long-term strategic goals. Oversees the recruitment, educational progress, and academic success of student-athletes. Sets the expectation for coaches and student-athletes that performance in the classroom is the primary purpose of higher education and that pursuit of knowledge and earning a degree are the main goals and works collaboratively with Admissions, Financial Aid, and the Registrar's Office to ensure that athletic scholarships are awarded properly, and students are successfully matriculating. Oversees overall direction, coordination, and the evaluation of departmental administrative duties, including (but not limited to): risk management and insurance coverage; athletic training procedures; facility oversight and scheduling; event management; team transportation; and budget preparation and monitoring. Ensures compliance with policies of the university, and conference and national athletic affiliations. Supervises utilization of athletic facilities including scheduling, maintenance, and construction. Maximizes visibility for the athletic program through effective public relations and media relations efforts. Serves as liaison with athletic conference, regional, and national affiliation for athletics and engages in the governance and leadership of the MIAA and the NCAA. Develops and implements plans for fundraising and revenue generation for the athletic program and works collaboratively with Alumni Office, MSSU Foundation, University Marketing & Relations Office, athletic booster club steering committee. Maintains strong working relationships with other departments on campus and with the external community and serves as liaison with student body leadership, and other college officials in administering the department as a viable part of the University. Serves as the principal spokesperson for the athletic program. Supervises and manages all subordinate supervisors and department employees in all the areas of the Athletic Department, in accordance with university policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; assign and direct, appraise performance, reward and discipline employees, provide guidance, address complaints, and resolve problems. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein and as may be assigned. Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in Sports Administration, Public Administration, Business or related field from accredited four-year college or university required. At least six years of experience (or advanced degree and at least four years of experience) of progressively responsible related work in intercollegiate athletics administration that includes a minimum of three years leading and/or supervising the work of others required.   • Evidence of a high degree of accessibility and openness to students, faculty and staff.
  • Proven ability to lead a team of skilled athletic professionals effectively and make tough personnel decisions when necessary. Experience with directing, inspiring, team-building and motivating others, and measuring the performance and progress of people, teams and organizations.
  • Ability to develop strong collaborations across the University and the ability to work effectively with many different constituencies.
  • Comprehensive understanding of intercollegiate athletics and sports management within higher education and an understanding of the role of intercollegiate athletics at a state-supported system.
  • Experience in budgeting and personnel management; NCAA rules and regulations; Title IX compliance, gender equity and diversity.
  • Ability to lead and directly supervise and manage employees.
  • Demonstrated commitment to execute strategic goals and mission with a university-first perspective and a customer-focused strategy.
  • Ability to establish a clear and understandable vision for the Athletics Department and build the operational components to execute the vision.
  • Ability to identify current and future challenges and propose and implement effective solutions.
  • Successful negotiation and persuasion skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with an ability to effectively communicate and when needed persuasively to a variety of audiences both external and internal to the University.
  • Strong external relations skills and the ability to build partnerships within the community and generate revenue.
